Auckland

Sunday, February 4, 2007

We left Los Angeles around 9:00 pm on Thursday, February 1st and arrived in Auckland at 6:00 am on Saturday, February 3rd.  That’s only 12 hours flying time because we skipped February 2nd completely when we crossed the International Date Line.  The flight was fine, although too bumpy to get much sleep.  We didn’t do a lot of sightseeing on Saturday as we were very tired, but we did walk around the harbor and went to the top of the Sky Tower.  On Sunday we drove all over the city visiting many of the highlights.  It was good to start the trip on a weekend, as there was very little traffic in Auckland.  Jay adapted to driving the British way quickly, although the first day he turned on the wipers every time he tried to signal a turn because the turn signal is on the opposite side of the steering column.  Barbara had a lot of laughs, but Jay will have his laughs when she drives.  At least Jay is remembering to stay on the correct side of the road.  The roads are good and it was easy finding our way around Auckland.  The biggest challenge was getting past three cows on the road as we drove to the top of Mount Eden.  Wonder what we’ll see when we get out of the city!  We will miss the Super Bowl because it will start around noon on Monday here. Go Bears!  We hope the warm, sunny weather continues as we head north tomorrow.
