Round-trip cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Civitavecchia (Rome) with Lynn and Jim
42 days from Friday, October 19th to Friday, November 30th 2012.
The four of us planned this relaxing trip that stopped at quite a few ports that we were seeing for the first time. Our most memorable day for news was November 7th, the day after the election when Obama beat Romney. We were up about 3 am Barcelona time when we got the good news on CNN. We celebrated at a cafe along Las Ramblas in Barcelona where all the locals were happy with the election results, too.
October 22, 2012 — Our first stop was the Port of Philipsburg, St. Maarten. We stopped for refreshments in Marigot, where the weather was sunny and warm.
October 30th, 2012 —The good weather continued across the Atlantic, but turned damp and rainy once we got to the Canary Islands. Our first of three stops was Tenerife, where we found an internet cafe and walked for miles. We had lunch before returning to the ship.
October 31, 2012 — Today we were in the Port of Las Palmas. Jay and I went on what was supposed to be an 8 hour tour around this island (Gran Canaria). It rained so hard when we got in the mountains (about 2800 ft.) that we couldn't continue on because roads were closed due to flooding. The road was very narrow and the bus very large, so the many switchbacks and the rain made it an exciting ride. Barbara took the photo of the winding road through the mountains from the bus when we were returning to the port after the tour was cancelled. She entered it in the photo contest onboard and won first prize in the landscape category. Columbus stopped at Las Palmas before his first voyage to the new world and the island is where Generalissimo Franco launched a military coup in 1936 and started the Spanish Civil War.
