Dubrovnik

Thursday, September 30, 2010

Dubrovnik was a port we visited on a cruise in 2006, so today we went on a shore excursion that took us to the small resort town of Cavtat, population 3,000.  We had about an hour to explore this charming town that is about 30 minutes south of Dubrovnik and 20 minutes from the the border with Montenegro and Bosnia/Herzegovina.  The drive along the Dalmatian coast through the Konavle Valley was beautiful.  We left Cavtat and returned to Dubrovnik, where we watched a folkloric performance with costumes, dances and songs from several Croatian provinces.  We walked a short distance into the old walled city through the Ploce Gate.  This time we did not do the walk along the top of the walls, as it is quite strenuous and they now charge 10 euros just to go up on the wall.  Our guide took us on a brief walk through Old Town.  We exited at the Pile Gate and returned by bus to the Noordam.  Croatia is a wonderful country with a Mediterranean climate that has been rebuilt after the horrible damage done by the Serbs and Milosevic in the 90s.  On our team for trivia today were two couples from Perth, Australia.  We got a few more answers right than yesterday, but there are some really good players on board.  Another happy hour with the group at 5:00, then dinner.  We went to the show tonight--a high-energy fun performance by a Brit who played the piano and sang.
