Rooftop of Hotel Smeraldo

Monday, September 27, 2010

We walked to the train station in Sorrento (we know the way now) and got on the 10:07 train to Naples and arrived about 1 1/4 hours later.  It was about a fifteen minute walk between the two train stations in Naples and we had about an hour to spare before the Eurostar left for Rome at 12:50.  An hour later we were in Rome and took a short cab ride to the Hotel Smeraldo, where Gayle, Jerry, Lynn, Jim, Terry, David, June and Lee are also staying.  Jim and LaRue (their hotel is near the Vatican) joined us for cocktails on the roof.  At six our group of twelve started off on one of Rick Steves’ walks around Rome, starting from the Campo de’ Fiori and ending at the Spanish Steps.  We stopped for dinner at the Ristorante Di Rienzo near the Pantheon.  The food was very good and we were entertained by a female singer with a beautiful voice.  Jim and LaRue left us after dinner.  We then had gelato from a nearby shop and continued on the walk to the next stop, Trevi Fountain.  Only Terry, Gayle and Jerry went on to the Spanish Steps.  The rest of us returned to the hotel about 9:30.
