Shenandoah National Park/Harpers Ferry

We left the hotel in Harrisonburg a little before nine after having a complimentary breakfast of waffles and juice.  We drove east for a short time and then headed north on the Skyline Drive along the Blue Ridge Mountains.  We’ve done some of this drive before, but decided it was worth doing again.  We hiked part of the Appalachian Trail near the Stony Man Overlook.  Parts of this trail were steep with lots of stones.  We walked another part of the trail near the Hogback Overlook.  This part of the trail was less strenuous.  We stopped for a picnic lunch of apples, popcorn and chocolate (three food groups?) near the north end of Skyline Drive.  Just north and east of the park is Harpers Ferry WV, where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers meet.  Maryland is across the Potomac and Virginia is on the other side of the Shenandoah river.  The 150th anniversary of John Brown’s raid on the arsenal at Harpers Ferry will be celebrated on October 16, 2009.  Brown was an abolitionist who was tried for treason and murder after the raid and was hanged in nearby Charles Town.  The raid brought the moral issue of slavery to the forefront and headed the country towards civil war.  Historic Harpers Ferry is a national park and many of the buildings from the mid-1800’s remain.  We climbed many steep stairs to view Jefferson Rock (our legs are really aching now!).  After visiting Harpers Ferry, we drove a short distance to Charles Town, where we are spending the night.  There is a casino here, so of course we had to stop.  Jay won more than Barbara lost, and they gave us each $25 cash for joining their players club, so we had a good time.  We had a pizza at Pizza Hut--our first visit in many years.  Today’s time on the road was about 7 hours and we covered 148 miles.

Although today was mostly cloudy, it was perfect weather (mid-60’s) for hiking and sightseeing along the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.  It was warmer and sunnier (high 70’s) in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
