Mediterranean — 2010

St. Paul

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Very rough seas prevented us from being in our scheduled port of Monte Carlo, Monaco today.  We went instead to Cannes, France and our shore excursion to St.  Paul de Vence didn’t change except for our starting point.  We were disappointed that we wouldn’t see Monte Carlo, but Cannes was interesting.  All 14 of us tendered into Cannes, then went on the same bus along the French Riviera.  We passed through the towns of Golfe Juan, Juan les Pins (site of annual jazz festival) and Antibes.  We left the coast and went inland to the medieval town of St.  Paul.  The town has a wall around it and is set on top of a hill with beautiful views.  We followed our guide along the ramparts to the cemetery, and then we were on our own for about 2 hours.  We spent some time in the cemetery and found Marc Chagall’s grave.  James Baldwin is also buried here.  The cemetery has the best views of any we’ve seen!  The population of St.  Paul today is only about 300, but a few thousand on the hills near it count themselves as part of St.  Paul.  We returned to Cannes by the much faster highway and spent some time looking around the city.  Napoleon started his walk to Paris through the Alps from Cannes.  Renoir spent his last years here.  We took pictures of the Palais de Festivals where the annual Cannes Film Festival takes place.  We also walked along the famous Boulevard de la Croisette, where stores such as Gucci, Rolex (all closed today, Sunday) and outdoor restaurants make this city one of the world’s most elegant resorts.  We got back to the ship around 3:00 and our tender didn’t have any problems, but the nearby Seaborne’s tenders were having trouble.  We had happy hour at 5:00 (no trivia today) and a very rocky dinner at 6:00.  It was difficult walking to the other end of the ship for the entertainment, an Irish couple who sang and played guitar and violin.  We didn’t have any problems sleeping with the bouncy ride.
