Asheville

We left the Gambone's home around 8:41 and drove to a place called Chimney Rock.  There is an elevator there that takes you up about 26 stories for a great view.  Unfortunately there was a power outage and we would have had to walk up so we drove on to the Biltmore Estate.  The house is the largest privately-owned home in the U.S.  Words can't describe the beauty of this home and its furnishings.  It is 175,000 sq.  ft.  (4.5 acres) which is about three times the size of the White House or Hearst Castle.  It has 250 rooms and was built for George Vanderbilt and completed in 1895.   We spent about 5 hours at the estate, touring the house (it took 1 3/4 hours to see it all), the gardens and the winery.  The estate covers about 8,000 acres.  Frederick Law Olmsted, who also landscaped Central Park, designed the grounds on the Biltmore Estate.  We tasted some Biltmore wines at the winery.   We drove along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville after we left the estate.  We got back to the Gambone's around 6:15 and they took us on a tour of the Hendersonville area.   We had dinner with them at a restaurant called Kelsey's.   Back at their house, we had apple pie made by Denise's 92 year old mother.  It was late when we went to bed and we didn't get today's blog done until Wednesday in Gatlinburg.  Today's drive was 130 miles and we walked about 6 miles (probably more than a mile in the Biltmore home alone).

The best thing we saw today was the sun.  The sightseeing was also spectacular; we saw the Biltmore Estate and went for a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The temperature was very comfortable in the morning but it was warm and humid by late afternoon.
